Believe it or not, the cold, damp, muggy, short days of Autumn & Winter are the absolutely BEST times to plant new fruit bushes( & trees, & roses, & shrubs and just about any other woody plants). While we find it all a bit miserable, these plants are fast asleep and won`t be disturbed by us moving house for them. Choose a dry day for planting, so that you dont trample the life (and air) out of a claggy wet soil, and once you`ve got them in give them a good watering. Don`t forget a good handful of organic fertiliser (bonemeal is ideal) mixed round the roots, and a bucketful of planting compost mixed 50/50 with the soil in your planting pits. The earlier you put them in, the better. Although fruit bushes are dormant now, they can make some new root growth in mild spells over the winter, getting them off to a flying start in the spring.
